The Central Institute of Medical Engineering (ZiMT) hosts a Journal Club series for researchers from the FAU and from the University Hospital of Erlangen to present their recent work in the form of an informal 30-minute talk followed by a question and answer session. The Journal Club is open to everyone and also serves as an opportunity for the ZiMT to present its services and discuss potential collaborations.

If you are interested in presenting at or attending an upcoming Journal Club, please contact the ZiMT.

Towards entry "ZiMT Journal Club February 2022: Prof. Dr. Stefan Funk / PD Dr. Thilo Michel / Medical Physics with x-rays at ECAP: Phase contrast imaging, detector development and dosimetry"

We use approaches developed in particle physics to advance experimental techniques in other areas such as medical physics, non-destructive testing and laboratory astrophysics. X-ray imaging is well known to everyone, as an attenuation image is taken for medical diagnostics and non-destructive testin...

Towards entry "ZiMT Journal Club December 2021: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Seel / Tracking the Unmeasurable and Achieving the Infeasible – Dynamic Inference and Learning in Plug-and-Play Sensor Networks, Continuous Sphygmomanometry and Intelligent Neuroprostheses"

Even if something cannot be measured directly, it might still be determined and tracked accurately by combining information that is hidden in the measured data with nonrestrictive prior knowledge. Likewise, a given task might be infeasible at first but become achievable by learning from repeated att...

Category: Aktuelles, Allgemein, ZiMT Journal Club 14. June 2021
Towards entry "ZiMT Journal Club July 2021: Prof. Vasily Zaburdaev / How physics helps to understand biofilms"

The lives of humans and bacteria are inseparable. Bacteria predominantly grow as biofilms, which are complex communities of cells forming on almost any kind of surface. For better, biofilms protect plant roots and give taste to cheese. For worse, they cause numerous chronic infections that defy anti...

Towards entry "ZiMT Journal Club June 2021: Prof. Tobias Reichenbach / Decoding the neural processing of speech"

Decoding the neural processing of speech

Understanding speech in noisy backgrounds requires selective attention to a particular speaker. Humans excel at this challenging task, while current speech recognition technology still struggles when background noise is loud. The neural mechanisms by whic...

Category: Aktuelles, Allgemein, ZiMT Journal Club 26. March 2021
Towards entry "ZiMT Journal Club April 2021: Priv.-Doz. Dr. Ragai Edward Matta / 3D optical measuring methods in dentistry"

The rapid development of CAD/CAM technology is already noticeable in many areas of dentistry. It allows manufacturing processes related to dental restorations to be carried out more accurately and faster in many aspects. A prerequisite for this success is the highly precise three-dimensional transfe...
